Stinging Insects
Finding a hornet or wasp nest around your home can be potentially hazardous to yourself, your family and pets. Both can be extremely aggressive – stinging and swarming around people whenever they believe their nests are being threatened.
Hornets and wasps can be found around your Northern Virginia home in the autumn months of the year as the weather gets slightly cooler but isn’t cold enough to point of freezing. You’ll notice them during this time of year whenever you are outdoors and especially on occasions where food and drinks are involved.
There Are Different Types of Bees, Wasps & Hornets
There are several different types of hornets and wasps that can be found in the northern Virginia region, including: yellow jackets, bald faced hornets, European hornets, gold-digger wasp and the black wasp to name just a few.
Hornets and wasps usually make nests in small openings such as cracks or holes in wall, in outdoor furniture and inside of exterior light fixtures. You’ll also find hornets and wasp nests underneath eaves of homes and deck railings.
Some Can Sting Multiple-Times
Unlike honey bees, who die as soon as soon as their stingers detach from their bodies after a sting, hornets and wasps can sting several times during an attack. Their stings can be extremely dangerous to anyone with allergies and can cause extreme discomfort and pain to anyone being stung. As such, it’s always important that no one try to get rid of a hornet or wasp nest by him or herself.
